Kansas Spring Snow Storm

Kansas weather is not all that predictable sometimes. I like to say that "Kansas weather is moody because you never know what you're going to get".
At this time it is Spring. Flowers are supposed to be blooming, birds are suppose to be chirping and baseball games are supposed to be getting started. However, that isn't what is happening right now in Kansas.

This is taken from our front door looking to the left towards Larry's vehicle in our driveway.

This is taken from our front door looking to the right and down the street.

Last night we lost power for a few hours. It's funny how you can be dead asleep and at the exact moment that the power goes out your eyes fly open to the sound of dead silence. A little eerie.

A Little Morning Madness

In our house it isn't unusual to be woken up by a little boy who likes to wrestle with Dad. Because the boys tend to get a little bit too rambunctious I try to stay out of the way.
Here is what the boys did first thing this morning.

Basketball

Just a few pics from Mylan's last day of basketball season. Mylan is jersey #2. In some of the pics he's a blurry jersey #2! He had an all day tournament. His team ended up playing three games. The boys were very tired by the end of the day. Mylan played so well-the best he's played all season! He brought his A-game to that tournament! Way to go Mylan!

Mylan attentively watching another team play during some down time between his team's games.

Mylan is the one with his hand in the air.

Is he trying to do the splits? A new basketball move perhaps?

Mylan is on the floor.

At one point during the day, while watching the game, two of the little girls asked Larry to read to them. It was so cute! The two little girls are two of Mylan's team mate's little sisters. Ryland and Molly.

Ryland is on the left and Molly is on the right.

It was also funny because Larry kept trying to watch the game but the little girls kept bringing one book after another. It's was adorable!

Mylan's 1st Leprechaun Trap 2006

Every Year, at Mylan's school, the kids make a leprechaun trap and place then in various places around the school. The kids are always close to catching a Leprechaun but have never been lucky enough. The Leprechaun always leave behind green "Leprechaun dust".

So this weekend while Mylan and I were shopping at Wal-Mart, Mylan decides that he needs some supplies to build a new and improved Leprechaun trap. So we head to the craft section. His supplies include: a small board, markers, VERY STICKY tape, glitter glue pens, a few pennies and a small cup. When we get home Mylan goes right to work on his new idea. Mylan glues the small cup to the board to pose as a pot for his gold. He then paints the pennies with his gold glitter glue pen. He intends to fool the Leprechaun into thinking it is his pot of gold! Mylan then draws a path to the pot of gold and a few bits of grass around the path. Then the last thing he does is place the VERY STICKY tape upside down around the pot of gold in order to trap the Leprechaun! After all the hard work is done, Mylan and I head outside to front yard and choose a very sneaky place to put the trap. Once in place we strategically place some leaves and sticks around the trap for disguise. Now all we have to do is wait! Throughout the course of the night, until bedtime, we would check on his trap to see if he caught anything. No such luck! However, in the morning, the first thing we did was put on our robes and go outside to see if we had any luck. We did! We saw Leprechaun foot prints! The Leprechaun even got stuck on the tape and somehow got away! Mylan came so close to catching a Leprechaun!

He was soooooo excited! He has told everyone how he almost caught a Leprechaun!

TOP SECRET NOTE TO PARENTS! In order to fool your 'special little someone' into thinking they have almost caught a Leprechaun you must be VERY, VERY, VERY SNEAKY! I secretly took one of Mylan's wrestling guy's from his toy box. Later, after he was sound asleep (You MUST make sure they are sound asleep...I mean this is their childhood memories are are talking about here!) I then got a small cup of dirt and mixed it into mud. Then I quietly went into the front yard and used the wrestling doll to make little "Leprechaun footprints" along the path leading to the pot of gold! I even placed it on the board and messed up some of the leaves around the trap.

Results of Mylan's Leprechaun Trap

Happy St. Patty's Day!

Ok, so here are the results of Mylan's Leprechaun trap for 2009.
He came so close to catching a Leprechaun!

He decided to place it in the same place he put his last Leprechaun trap (in the front yard near a bush) because last time he came very close to catching one!

Although Mylan wasn't with us St. Patty's Day morning, (he'll be with us later in the day) I decided to go outside to see if our trap worked and take a few pictures. I appears as if a Leprechaun might actually have gotten trapped but managed to escape with the help of family or friends. Can you see the small white string hanging out of the wooden box? Click on the picture to enlarge it for a better view of the string. It has small knots in it and looks as though it was used to help the trapped Leprechaun climb free. Smart Leprechauns!

Here is the top part of the wooden box where the booby trap door was. You can see that the Leprechaun fell into the box as planned.

Yup it looks like we got pretty close but once again we were outsmarted by those tricky little Leprechauns!

How to Catch a Leprechaun

This is Mylan's second attempt at trying to catch a Leprechaun.
This year he just might catch one because he's come up with a very good idea for a trap.

This is his drawing of his plan.

We needed to gather our supplies first:
Pieces of wood, cardboard, super glue, wood glue, hammer and nails, fake grass, small pebbles, scissors, a fan to help the glue dry fast, tissue paper, sponges and a creative mind.

First he glues some small pebbles to a piece of wood.

Then Mylan and I head to the garage to construct a wooden box using wood glue, hammer and nails.

Mylan then lines the inside of the wooden box with foil. The foil is meant to help keep the Leprechauns magical powers from working. Hey, it doesn't hurt to try right!

Mylan then places some sponges at the bottom of the wooden box and makes a small bed for the Leprechaun. The Leprechauns comfort is very important to Mylan. (Double click on the photo to enlarge it and see a better view of the cute little bed.)

Then he places the booby trapped lid on top of the box using the cardboard and tissue paper. He glues the lid down with super glue.

By placing fake grass on top of the booby trapped lid he can fool the Leprechaun!

The idea is for the Leprechaun to climb up the rock wall in search of gold.

Then once the Leprechaun discovers the gold on the other side of the box he will walk across the grass to get to the gold and fall through the booby trap door! That's how we plan to catch a Leprechaun! You see underneath the fake grass is very thin tissue paper covering a small opening in the lid of the wooden box. The Leprechaun will fall through the trap door and be stuck inside of the wooden box.

I asked Mylan what he plans to do with the Leprechaun once he is caught. Mylan said, "I'll keep him in my room and feed him once in a while."

We make a pretty good team!
